OPERATIONS AT THE DEALERSHIPS
This document aims at informing the Dealerships about the operation of the on-demand forced regeneration procedure of the DPF.
This type of regeneration is operated by the Customer and is envisaged on vehicles with OPT. 6SN only.
The on-demand forced regeneration procedure is an innovative DPF electronic management system, specifically developed for those who cover very short distances, characterised by regular engine starting and stopping.
The Engine Control Module (ECM) constantly monitors the driving style and the type of routes travelled to manage the DPF regeneration with self-adaptive logic, thus allowing optimisation of the engine oil replacement intervals and an improved use of the vehicle.
The forced regeneration of the DPF by the customer (on-demand regeneration) can only be performed in the following conditions:

The vehicle has the OPT. 6SN

the electronic control unit, only after recognising a driving profile of the vehicle that does not allow the completion of the automatic cycle for DPF regeneration, informs that the DPF must be regenerated, switching-on some indicators on the instrument panel

Below is a description concerning the switching-on stages of the warning lights on the instrument panel.
DPF warning light (A – Fig. 1) switching-on
When this warning light switches on, the “on-demand” regeneration must be performed within 50 km of activation.
No errors are set in the Engine Control Module (ECM).
DPF and MIL warning lights (A and B – Fig. 1) switching-on
If the “on-demand” regeneration is not completed within 50 km of DPF warning light activation, the MIL warning light switches on as well. The vehicle will enter recovery status, reducing the engine performance; the forced “on-demand” regeneration must be performed within 2 and a half hours of vehicle operation.Error P1215 is set in the engine control module (ECM). MIL warning light (B – Fig. 1) switching-onIf the “on-demand” regeneration is not performed within 2 and a half hours of DPF and MIL warning light activation, the DPF warning light switches off and only the MIL warning light stays on. The vehicle remains in recovery status and the forced regeneration can only be performed at a Dealership, using the diagnosis equipment. Error P1564 is set in the engine control module (ECM).  | Failure to observe the appropriate procedure for a long distance when the DPF warning light comes on, can cause the MIL warning light to come on, resulting in damage to the DPF device and the loss of warranty coverage for this device. |
 | Compliance with the covered mileage can be checked, if necessary, using the diagnosis equipment and referring to the errors set in the engine control module. |

Can spontaneous regeneration occur on these vehicles as well? |
Yes, on vehicles equipped with OPT 6SN the system may also regenerate itself automatically, depending on the car's conditions of use. The system is able to recognise the type of driving profile during use; for example, in case of motorway driving profile, the system can start normal spontaneous regeneration. When the system is unable to start spontaneous regeneration, due to a door-to-door driving profile, the DPF light comes on. In this case, you need to stop and perform the procedure within the next 50 km from the switching-on of the single DPF warning light, to prevent the switching-on of the MIL warning light as well (see below). | |
What happens if I drive the vehicle for more than 50 km after the switching-on of the DPF warning light only? |
The MIL warning light on the instrument cluster will switch on as well and the vehicle sets in Recovery mode, reducing its performance. In this case, you need to stop the vehicle and perform the forced regeneration procedure. Remember that failure to observe the appropriate procedure for a long distance when the DPF warning light comes on, can cause the MIL warning light to come on, resulting in damage to the DPF device and the loss of warranty coverage for this device. | |
If I switch off the vehicle after the switching-on of the single DPF warning light, can I perform this operation after many hours as well (for example after one night)? |
Yes, the threshold that requires the procedure only involves the covered mileage (50 km); nevertheless, the engine must be running in standard conditions. | |
If I switch off the vehicle within 2 and a half hours after the switching-on of DPF + MIL warning lights, can I perform this procedure also many hours after the threshold (for example after one night)? |

If I make some mistakes in the forced regeneration procedure, can I restart it from the beginning without any inconvenience? |
Yes, you can repeat the procedure from the beginning. |
