FAULT COMPLAINED OF

Oil leak from the power steering box pipe seal plate.

TECHNICAL CAUSE

Poor sealing of the gaskets on the power steering box pipes.

OPERATIONS IN NETWORK

Network behaviour standards towards the Customer

• Once the customer's claimed fault is confirmed, reassure the customer that the fault will be solved by replacing the gaskets for the pipes connectors on the power steering box.
• After the operation show the Customer what has been done and make sure he is satisfied.

Service Solution

Once the customer's claimed fault is confirmed, check that the leak is due to the failed sealing of the pipe connectors on the steering box, see the example in Fig. 1. If this is the case, replace the gaskets, proceeding as described in the Operating Cycle below.

OPERATION CYCLE

Position the vehicle on the lift.

Turn the ignition key to STOP

Carefully clean the area surrounding the connecting area for the pipes to the power steering box (re. Fig. 1).

Position a suitable container for collecting the power steering fluid.

Working from underneath the vehicle, by the quick connector, disconnect the hose (1 - Fig. 2) from the pipe (2) and drain the power steering fluid into the container.

Undo the screw (1 - Fig. 3) fixing the sealing plate (2).

First release the pipe (1 - Fig. 4), with seal plate, and then remove the pipe (2).

Suitably protect the pipe terminals to prevent the inlet of dirt.

If the gaskets (1 - Fig. 5) or parts of them remain inside the housings on the power steering box, remove them with a suitable plastic tool (2) and, using a mirror, make sure THERE ARE NO RESIDUES inside the housings.

Pay special attention in order not to damage the housing while removing the gaskets.

Lubricate the new gaskets (1 - Fig. 6) with power steering oil and place them at the end of the pipes (2 and 3).

Position the pipes in place - first the pipe (2) and then the pipe (3).

Position the seal plate (4) and tighten the fixing screw to the torque of 1.5 ± 0.2 daNm.

Fill the power steering system with new fluid, until reaching the MAX. notch on the reservoir, then bleed, as described in Op. 0010T70 and Op. 0010T75 of the Service Manual.

The power assisted steering system should not run dry. The oil that comes out should not be re-used.
